How to get a Florida insurance license

Step 1: Complete a Florida Pre-Licensing Insurance Course

To qualify for the Florida insurance license exam, you must complete a pre-licensing insurance course that is certified by the Florida Department of Financial Services. Upon passing the pre-licensing course final exam, you will be awarded a Certificate of Course Completion.

As of 07/01/2023, the Florida Department of Financial Services has reduced the pre-licensing credit hours for the 2-14 Life and Variable Annuity course from 40 hours to 30 hours.

Step 2: Pass the Florida Insurance License Exam

Upon successfully completing your pre-licensing insurance course, you must register with Pearson Vue to take your state insurance exam. Exam reservations can be made online at the Pearson Vue website or over the phone at (888) 274-2020.

About the state exam

• You are required to provide a current form of identification with a photo (driver license, passport, etc.) that exactly matches the name on the exam registration at the testing center. You are not required to present your Certificate of Course Completion.
• Exam times are typically available in the morning, afternoon, and early evening on weekdays at various locations throughout the state
• You should arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow time for check-in procedures. If you arrive late you will not be allowed to take your exam and will forfeit your exam fee.
• Applicants with disabilities should make special arrangements prior to registering for the state exam by contacting the testing administrator at (888) 274-2020
• Passing score is 70%

Step 3: Submit Electronic Fingerprints

You must schedule an appointment to submit electronic fingerprints to complete a background check. The Florida Department of Financial Services requires fingerprints to ensure that an applicant does not have a disqualifying criminal or social services background that would prevent them from being a licensed insurance agent.

Step 4: Complete an Insurance License Application

Once you have passed your state insurance exam you can apply for your insurance license through the Florida Department of Financial Services website. Click the button below and follow the steps to complete your application:

1. If you do not already have an account, click 'Create Account' from the menu on the right
2. Choose 'Individual' from the drop down and complete the required information on the following pages
3. Complete your application by submitting a payment using your credit card

License qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age
• A resident of the state of Florida
• A United States citizen or legal alien who possesses a work authorization from the United States Immigration and Naturalization Services
• Pass the state insurance exam for the lines of authority for which you are applying
• Must not have committed any act that is a ground for denial, suspension, or revocation of license. Click here for more details

Application Fee: $50.00

Members of the US Armed Forces, their spouses, and veterans who have retired within 24 months are exempted from the application filing fee for licenses. Those who meet these criteria will need to send a copy of the DD Form 214 to AgentLicensing@MyFloridaCFO.com and request a refund of the application filing fee.

Print your insurance license

Once your application has been approved you will receive an email from the Florida Department of Financial Services. You will be able to view and print your Florida insurance license from your MyProfile account.
