How to get a Virginia insurance license

As a life and health insurance education provider, our goal is to guide you through the pre-licensing process. In addition to completing your pre-licensing training, we have simplified the steps to attaining your Virginia insurance license.

Virginia Insurance Exam Qualifications

In order to qualify to sit for your Life & Annuities, or Health or Life, Health & Annuities Virginia insurance exam, the following must occur:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • If you are not a citizen of the United States, you must provide proof of eligibility to work in the U.S.
  • Be a resident of the state of Virginia
  • Must not have committed any act that is a ground for denial of license

Basic Steps to Obtain a Virginia Insurance License

  1. Prepare for your state exam with an insurance course from a Virginia insurance school for the Life & Annuities or Health insurance license, or a course for the Life, Health & Annuities insurance license.
  2. Schedule your state exam online through Prometric, or contact them by phone at 1-866-891-6396.
  3. Upon successful completion of your state exam, you should complete an insurance license application through Vertafore (formerly Sircon). Once you are on Vertafore’s website, you will choose 'Apply for a license' from the menu on the left. On the next page choose 'Individual' next to Submit Resident Application. Next, complete the application by choosing Virginia, entering your information and submitting the appropriate application fees.
  4. A Criminal History Record Report, which must be obtained through the Virginia State Police and be no more than 90 days old. If you recently established residence in Virginia within the past six months, a Criminal History Record Report from your previous resident state is required.
  • Note: If you need to retake the state exam you will be required to wait 24 hours from the previous attempt. If you are unsuccessful passing the state exam within 3 attempts, you must wait 30 days before you are eligible to reschedule.

$15 Application Fee

  • Applicants with disabilities, or whose first language is not English, should make special arrangements by calling Prometric at 1-888-226-9406. Special accommodations must be completed prior to scheduling your insurance exam.
