Insurance Exam Qualifications

In order to qualify to sit for your Life insurance, or the Life, Accident & Health Texas insurance exam, the following must occur:
  • Complete an online application for your insurance license and submit appropriate fees

  • Be a natural person at least 18 years of age

  • Be a resident of the state of Texas

  • Be a United States citizen or legal alien who possesses a work authorization from the United States Immigration and Naturalization Services

  • Not committed an act that is a ground for denial, suspension, or revocation of an insurance license

  • Be fingerprinted at one of the Department's fingerprint sites

  • If licensed in another state within three years, provide a Letter of Clearance
Who is Exempt from the Insurance Exam?

- Waiver of examination can be granted if applicant was previously licensed for same lines in their prior home state; license in that state must be active at the time of moving to Texas and applicant must attach original clearance letter from prior home state and must apply for licensure within 90 days of the date of the move to Texas; or

- Waiver of examination can be granted if applicant holds CLU or FLMI designation. Must attach copy of CLU or FLMI designation with application.

Basic Steps to Obtain an Insurance License

  1. Prepare for your Life, or Life, Accident & Health Texas insurance exam with one of our online pre-licensing courses provided by National Online Insurance School

  2. Registration for your state exam can be completed online at Prometric. Once there, click on the Start button under "Schedule your test". First time users must create a login account, which will then allow you to schedule your exam location, date and time. Appointments for examinations can also be made via phone toll-free at 1-866-267-0455 between 8am and 5pm (Central time), Monday through Friday.

  3. Either before or after your successful completion of the state exam, you should complete an online application for licensure at Sircon. Choose "Individual" next to Submit Resident Application. Next, complete the application by choosing Texas, entering in your information and submitting the appropriate application fees. This application must be completed within a period of 12 months from the date you pass the state exam.

  4. Completion of electronic fingerprints are required in combination with your application, and can be completed at L-1 Identity Solutions. Fingerprints are automatically sent to the Texas Department of Insurance.
- Additional licensing requirements and protocols can be obtained from Prometric or directly from the Texas Department of Insurance.

Expected Licensing Costs:

- $70 Exam Fee – This is the cost to register for your state exam

- $50 Application Fee – Paid during online application at Sircon

- $44.20 Electronic Fingerprint Fee – In order to complete your electric fingerprints, you must first schedule a time and location,

Helpful Hints to Licensure

  • If English is not your primary language, you may qualify for additional time for your test by requesting an ESL Authorization from Prometric.

    Please include:
      - A personal letter requesting the authorization; and
      - A letter from your English instructor or sponsoring company (on company letterhead), certifying that English is not your primary language.

  • If you have any background issues regarding law enforcement records, you will want to obtain the following paperwork from the court clerk’s office in the county it occurred, and mail it to the Texas Department of Insurance upon completion of your online application.
