How to get a Washington insurance license

At National Online Insurance School, our goal is to guide you through the pre-licensing process. In addition to completing your pre-licensing training, we have simplified the steps to attaining your Washington insurance license.

Step 1: Prepare with an Washington Pre-Licensing Insurance Course

Our Washington pre-licensing insurance courses cover the various insurance concepts, definitions, insurance laws and agent regulations listed on the Washington Licensing Information Bulletin. Courses are presented in a clear and concise format and include instructional videos, interactive illustrations, practice exams, and student support.

Step 2: Pass the Washington Insurance License Exam

Once you are prepared to sit for your state exam, you must register with PSI Services to take your state insurance exam. Exam reservations can be made online at the PSI website by following the steps below and clicking the 'Register for the State Exam' button, or over the phone at (833) 518-7456.

  1. Create an account on the PSI Exams website
  2. Once you've created your account, select WA Office of the Insurance Commissioner from the 'Select Organization' dropdown menu
  3. After selecting the WA Office of the Insurance Commissioner, choose your exam from the 'Select Test' dropdown
  4. Information regarding your exam will populate on the page. Click the 'Continue' button located at the bottom of the page to complete your registration

Expected cost

Insurance Exam Fee: $38.00 for single-line exam (Life only or Disability only)

Insurance Exam Fee: $55.00 for the combined exam (Life and Disability)

About the state exam

  • You are required to provide a current form of identification with a photo (driver's license, passport, etc.) that exactly matches the name on the exam registration at the testing center. You are not required to present your Certificate of Course Completion.
  • Exam times are typically available in the morning, afternoon, and early evening on weekdays at various locations throughout the state
  • You should arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow time for check-in procedures. If you arrive late you will not be allowed to take your exam and will forfeit your exam fee.
  • Applicants with disabilities should make special arrangements prior to registering for the state exam by completing the form on the PSI Exams website.
  • Passing score is 70%

Step 3: Complete an Insurance License Application

Once you have passed your state insurance exam, you can apply for your insurance agent license through the Vertafore website. Click the button below and follow the steps to complete your application:

  1. Click 'Apply for a license' from the menu on the left
  2. Choose 'Individual' next to 'Submit Resident Application'
  3. Enter your information at the top of the page, choose your state and continue
  4. Select 'Producer' as your license type and continue
  5. Add which licenses you wish to apply for an continue

Step 4: Submit Electronic Fingerprints

After applying for your insurance license, you must submit electronic fingerprints to complete a background check. The Office of the Insurance Commissioner requires fingerprints to ensure that applicants do not have a disqualifying criminal or social services background that would prevent them from being a licensed insurance agent.
