How to get a North Carolina insurance license

As a state-certified life and health insurance education provider, our goal is to guide you through the pre-licensing process. In addition to completing your pre-licensing training, we have simplified the steps to attaining your North Carolina insurance license.

Step 1: Complete a North Carolina Pre-Licensing Insurance Course

To qualify for the North Carolina insurance license exam, you must complete a pre-licensing insurance course that is certified by the North Carolina Department of Insurance. Upon passing the pre-licensing course final exam, you will be awarded an Exam Admission Ticket.

Our North Carolina pre-licensing insurance courses cover the various insurance concepts, definitions, insurance laws and agent regulations listed on the North Carolina Examination Content Outline. Courses are presented in a clear and concise format and include instructional videos, interactive illustrations, practice exams, and student support.

Step 2: Complete an Insurance License Application

You can apply for an insurance license through the Vertafore website. Click the button below and follow the steps to complete your application:

  1. Click 'Apply for a license' from the menu on the left
  2. Click the New Insurance License button within the 'New Insurance Licenses' section
  3. Choose 'Resident,' then choose 'Individual,' and click the Continue button
  4. Enter your email address
  5. Enter your information and choose the state you wish to apply for a license, then click continue
  6. Select 'Resident Agent' as your license type and continue
  7. Select the types of license(s) you wish to apply for and continue
  8. Enter all requested information and submit payment

License qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • A resident of the state of North Carolina
  • Complete the required pre-licensing course hours for the lines of authority for which you are applying
  • Pass the state insurance exam for the lines of authority for which you are applying
  • Must not have committed any act that is a ground for denial, suspension, or revocation of license

Expected cost

Application Fee: $44 base fee plus $50 for each line of authority

Important
Upon completing your application you will receive an email with your National Producer Number (NPN) from Pearson Vue. You will need to obtain your NPN before you can register and schedule your state exam in the next step.

Step 3: Pass the North Carolina Insurance License Exam

Upon completing your pre-licensing insurance course, you must register with Pearson Vue to take your state insurance exam. Exam reservations can be made online at the Pearson Vue website or over the phone at (866) 265-6329.

Insurance Exam Fee: $45.00 per line of authority

About the state exam

  • You are required to provide a copy of your Exam Admission Ticket and two current forms of identification at the testing center. The name on the identification must exactly match the name on the registration. The primary identification must be government-issued and photo-bearing with a signature, such as a driver's license, passport, etc. The secondary identification must contain a valid signature and must not be expired, such as a Debit (ATM) or Credit card.
  • Exam times are typically available in the morning, afternoon and early evening at various locations throughout the state
  • You should arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow time for check-in procedures. If you arrive late, you will not be allowed to take your exam and will forfeit your exam fee.
  • Applicants with disabilities should make special arrangements before registering for the state exam by contacting the testing administrator
  • Passing score is 70%

Important
You must pass the state licensing exam within 90 days from the date of course completion, or a maximum of 5 exam attempts, whichever occurs first. If you cannot pass the exam within the required time or the maximum number of attempts, you must retake a state-approved pre-licensing course to be eligible to retake the state licensing exam.

Step 4: Submit Electronic Fingerprints

You must schedule an appointment to submit electronic fingerprints to complete a background check. Fingerprints are required by the North Carolina Department of Insurance to ensure that applicants do not have a disqualifying criminal or social services background that would prevent them from being a licensed insurance agent.

Electronic Fingerprints Fee: Approximately $38.00

Important
You are required to submit electronic fingerprints within 30 days of submitting your insurance license application. You will receive an email with instructions on how to complete this requirement from the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) only after submitting your insurance license application.
