How to get a Michigan insurance license

Step 1: Complete an Michigan Pre-Licensing Insurance Course

To qualify for the Michigan insurance license exam, you must complete a pre-licensing insurance course that is certified by the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services. Upon passing the pre-licensing course final exam, you will be awarded a Certificate of Course Completion.

Step 2: Pass the Michigan Insurance License Exam

Upon completing your pre-licensing insurance course, you must register with PSI Services to take your state insurance exam. Exam reservations can be made online at the PSI website by following the steps below and clicking the 'Register for the State Exam' button or over the phone at (855) 579-4639.

1. Click on the link that reads 'Government/State Licensing Agencies' on the left side of the PSI website
2. Choose Michigan from the 'Select Jurisdiction' drop-down menu and wait for a second drop-down menu to appear
3. Choose MI Department of Insurance from the 'Select Account' drop-down menu
4. Click on your exam from within the 'Classification' box
5. Click the button that reads 'Sign In or Create An Account' and follow the instructions provided

Note: You will be prompted for a 'Course Number' while completing your state exam registration. You can locate this number on your Certificate of Course Completion that you will receive upon passing your course final exam.

About the state exam

• You are required to provide two current forms of identification at the testing center. The name on the identification must exactly match the name on the registration. The primary identification must be government-issued and photo-bearing with a signature, such as a driver's license, passport, etc. The secondary identification must contain a valid signature and must not be expired, such as a Debit (ATM) or Credit card. You are not required to present your Certificate of Course Completion.
• Exam times are typically available in the morning, afternoon, and early evening on weekdays at various locations throughout the state
• You should arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow time for check-in procedures. If you arrive late, you will not be allowed to take your exam and will forfeit your exam fee.
• Applicants with disabilities should make special arrangements before registering for the state exam by contacting the testing administrator at (855) 579-4639
• Passing scores are as follows:
• Life, Accident & Health: 75%
• Life: 72%
• Accident & Health: 76%

Step 3: Complete an Insurance License Application

You can apply for an insurance license through the Vertafore website. Click the button below and follow the steps to complete your application:

1. Click 'Apply for a license' from the menu on the left
2. Click the New Insurance License button within the 'New Insurance Licenses' section
3. Choose 'Resident,' then choose 'Individual,' and click the Continue button
4. Enter your email address
5. Enter your information and choose the state you wish to apply for a license, then click continue
6. Select 'Resident Agent' as your license type and continue
7. Select the types of license(s) you wish to apply for and continue
8. Enter all requested information and submit payment
Complete an Online Application

License qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age
• A resident of the state of Michigan
• Pass the state insurance exam for the lines of authority for which you are applying
• Must not have committed any act that is a ground for denial, suspension, or revocation of license. Click here for more details

You must submit all required paperwork within 180 days of applying for your insurance license or the application will be considered withdrawn by the Department of Insurance.
