Approved Georgia Continuing Education Provider: 206305

Georgia insurance continuing education (CE) requirements require most resident producers to complete 24 hours of approved continuing education every 2 years.

CE Requirements Overview

  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years on the last day of your birth month
  • Total CE Required: 24 hours if license held less than 20 years
  • Total CE Required: 20 hours if license held more than 20 years
  • Ethics Requirement: 3 hours minimum
  • Credit Carryover: 50% max carryover; ethics does not carry forward
  • Reporting: Electronic submission to the Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner
  • License Renewal: State renewal portal

The sections below explain each requirement in detail and outline the steps to renew your Georgia insurance license.

Georgia License Renewal Cycle

Georgia insurance licenses must be renewed every two years. Continuing education requirements must be completed and reported before submitting your renewal application.

CE compliance deadline: The last day of the licensee's birth month, every 2 years.

Electronic renewals are typically available beginning 60 days prior to the expiration date through the Georgia licensing portal. Failure to complete continuing education requirements may delay renewal or result in license expiration if the license is not properly renewed.

You can renew your Georgia insurance license online here.

Continuing Education Hour Requirements

Georgia CE hour requirements depend on how long the licensee has been licensed.

  • Producers licensed LESS than 20 years: 24 CE hours total, including 3 hours of Ethics
  • Producers licensed 20+ years: 20 CE hours total, including 3 hours of Ethics

Product-Specific Training Requirements

Agents who sell certain insurance products must complete additional state-mandated training before engaging in those sales activities.

  • Annuity Best Interest Training: A 4-hour Annuity Suitability and Best Interest Standards course must be completed prior to selling annuity products. Residents and non-residents who have completed training that meets NAIC Best Interest standards in another state with substantially similar requirements are considered compliant.
  • Long-Term Care (LTC) Training: 8-hour initial training required prior to selling LTC products, plus 4-hour ongoing training required every 24 months after the initial training. Agents who completed another state's qualified Long-Term Care Partnership training may also be required to complete a 2-hour Georgia-specific Medicaid partnership course.
  • Flood Training: 3-hour one-time training must be completed prior to selling flood insurance products.

Course Completion Rules and Restrictions

The following rules apply to Georgia CE completion and credit.

Self-Study Course Completion

  • Students should complete all course material before attempting the final exam.
  • A minimum passing score of 70% is required on the final exam.
  • If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, unlimited retakes are permitted.
  • Final Exam Proctor Requirement: Georgia requires the final exam to be monitored by a qualified disinterested third party who is at least 18 years old and has no family or financial relationship with the student.

Line of Authority Restrictions

  • Courses must be approved for the line of authority held by the licensee.

Course Repetition

  • A course cannot be repeated more than once during a two-year license term for credit.

Carryover

  • Excess CE hours may be carried forward to the next renewal period up to a maximum of 50% of the next period's CE requirement.
  • Excess ethics hours may be applied toward general CE credit for the current compliance period but cannot be carried forward as ethics credit.

CE Reporting and Compliance Process

Course completions are reported electronically to the Georgia Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner through the Sircon reporting system the same day a student successfully completes the course final exam and satisfies all state participation requirements.

Licensees should verify compliance status and CE transcript through the state system and ensure all requirements are met before submitting their renewal application. You can view your Georgia CE transcript here.

If you need to confirm your license status or license number, you can search your Georgia insurance license here using the official Sircon lookup tool.

Non-Resident License Requirements

Non-resident producers who are in good standing in their home state are generally considered compliant with Georgia continuing education requirements and may be exempt from completing Georgia CE hours. However, product-specific training requirements may still apply depending on the line of business and activities performed in Georgia.

Continuing Education Exemptions

Some Georgia licensees may qualify for reduced or modified continuing education requirements based on license status or professional credentials.

  • Inactive License Status: Individuals who have been licensed as an agent for 10 consecutive years or more and hold a non-active license, and who do not perform insurance functions other than receiving renewal or deferred commissions, may be exempt from standard CE requirements.
  • Professional Designations or Degrees: Individuals holding a CFP, CLU, CPCU, ChFC, FLMI, CIC, CEBS, AAI, CRM, or a bachelor's degree with a major in Risk Management and Insurance from an accredited college are required to complete 12 hours of CE every two years, including 3 hours of Ethics, instead of the standard CE requirement.

Recordkeeping Requirements

Agents should maintain copies of continuing education completion certificates for at least five years from the date of completion in case of audit or verification by the Georgia Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner.
