How to get a West Virginia insurance license

As a state-certified life and health insurance education provider, our goal is to guide you through the pre-licensing process. In addition to completing your pre-licensing training, we have simplified the steps to attaining your West Virginia insurance license.

West Virginia Insurance Exam Qualifications

In order to qualify to sit for your Life, Accident & Health, or the Life, Accident & Health West Virginia insurance exam, the following must occur:

  • Successfully complete an approved insurance course for that respective license, such as those provided by National Online Insurance School. Provider ID# 202806
  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be a resident of the state of West Virginia

Basic Steps to Obtain a West Virginia Insurance License

  1. Successfully complete a pre-licensing course by an approved West Virginia insurance school for Life, or Accident & Health, or Life Accident & Health such as the courses offered by National Online Insurance School.
  2. Upon successfully completing the pre-licensing course, you can schedule your state exam online at Pearson Vue. Once there, choose Request an Examination Reservation. First time users must obtain a check-in code and will be asked to provide their name, email address and phone number, as well as a personal password. You will receive a check-in code immediately upon submitting the requested information and you will then be prompted to complete the online Reservation Request Form. You may also reserve a test date over the phone by calling 1-800-274-2614. You are required to present your Certificate of Completion that you receive upon passing your course final exam at the exam site on the day of your state exam.
  3. Completion of electronic fingerprints through an IdentoGo Center are required for a criminal history and federal background check. Electronic fingerprints should be completed after you have passed your state exam and before completing your insurance application, as you will receive a receipt that contains a 12-digit number that you will need to enter on your insurance license application. Fingerprints are valid for 30 days from the date taken.
  4. Upon submission of your electronic fingerprints, you should complete an insurance license application through Vertafore (formerly Sircon). Once you are on Vertafore’s website, you will choose 'Apply for a license' from the menu on the left. On the next page choose 'Individual' next to Submit Resident Application. Next, complete the application by choosing West Virginia, entering your information and submitting the appropriate application fees.
  • Note: Your Certificate of Completion that you receive upon passing the course final exam is valid for a period of 4 months. In addition, you must complete all licensing requirements and receive an issued license from the West Virginia Offices of the Insurance Commissioner within 1 year of passing the state insurance exam before you are required to retake a pre-licensing course.

Helpful Hints to Licensure

  • Your Certificate of Completion that you receive upon passing the course final exam is valid for a period of 4 months.
  • If English is not your first language, you can request additional time for your insurance exam by contacting us, and your instructor can notify Pearson Vue on your behalf. For additional information, you can also contact Pearson Vue directly by phone at 1-800-466-0450. This must be completed prior to scheduling your West Virginia insurance exam.
