How to get a Rhode Island insurance license

As a life and health insurance education provider, our goal is to guide you through the pre-licensing process. In addition to completing your pre-licensing training, we have simplified the steps to attaining your Rhode Island insurance license.

Rhode Island Insurance Exam Qualifications

In order to qualify to sit for your Life, Accident & Health, or Life, Accident & Health Rhode Island insurance exam, the following must occur:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be a resident of the state of Rhode Island
  • Not committed an act that is a ground for denial, suspension, or revocation of an insurance license

Basic Steps to Obtain a Rhode Island Insurance License

  1. Prepare for your state exam with an insurance course from a Rhode Island insurance school for Life, or Accident & Health, or Life Accident & Health.
  2. Schedule your state exam online at Pearson Vue. Once there, choose Request an Examination Reservation. First time users must obtain a check-in code and will be asked to provide their name, email address and phone number, as well as a personal password. You will receive a check-in code immediately upon submitting the requested information and you will then be prompted to complete the online Reservation Request Form. You may also reserve a test date over the phone by calling 1-800-274-4957.
  3. Upon successful completion of your state exam, you should complete an insurance license application through Vertafore (formerly Sircon). Once you are on Vertafore’s website, you will choose 'Apply for a license' from the menu on the left. On the next page choose 'Individual' next to Submit Resident Application. Next, complete the application by choosing Rhode Island, entering your information and submitting the appropriate application fees.
  4. Completion of a criminal background report by Office of the Rhode Island Attorney General. Background reports are valid for a period of 30 days. Contact the Attorney General's office by phone at 401-274-4400 for additional details.
  • Note: The Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation requires that an applicant must complete all licensing requirements and receive an issued license from the Department within 1 year of passing the state insurance exam before he or she is required to retake the state exam.
